3 Must Have Baby Soothing Products

As a St. Louis newborn photographer, part of the job description involves soothing babies. Here are some of my favorite items that I use in the process.

Happiest Baby on the Block

This book was introduced to me when I was pregnant with my son, Liam. It came in handy, because he was quite the fusspot as a baby. Little did I know all hours I spent soothing him would come in handy with my future career as a newborn photographer!

If you’re not familiar with the book, it discusses 5 things that, when used together, create a perfect soothing environment for a newborn. I use every single tip in this book in my sessions. While it has been years since I picked up an actual copy of the book, it was a lifesaver to me in many ways, and it is something I recommend any new mom have in her library.

The Baby Shusher

One of the tips in the book mentioned above is to use the “shhhhhhhhh” sound when soothing your baby. If you’ve ever made the “shhhhhhhh” sound over and over for long periods of time, you will understand how hard it becomes to do it! The good news is, with the baby shusher, you can save yourself from becoming lightheaded!

The only downside to the Baby Shusher is it does not have a continuous mode. It will only run in 15 or 30 minute bursts. If you want something that has a continuous mode option, I suggest this Avantek sound machine.

A Stretchy Swaddle Blanket

Swaddle blankets have come such a long way in recent years. So many options exist now that didn’t exist in the past. While options are great, it can also be overwhelming for a new mom! I have tried many types of swaddle blankets in my years as a mom and a newborn photographer. The easiest ones to use to get your baby wrapped snugly as possible is to use a wrap that is stretchy as well as soft.

The wraps I use in my photoshoots are simply pieces of stretchy material sold specifically to newborn photographers. They are gorgeous for photos; however they generally do not have finished edges, so may not be practical for daily home use. However, I have had the opportunity to see many being used by clients. If you are looking for the perfect swaddle set, I would highly recommend checking out Lou Lou. Their swaddle blankets are simply divine! If you prefer Amazon, this Posh Peanut Baby Swaddle Blanket is another nice option!

I hope you’ve found this list helpful, as these 3 items are so helpful if baby settling is in your future!
